Pendleton's been milling wool into fabric since 1863 and milling their shirting Umatilla wool fabric since 1924. The Board Shirt, still Pendleton's best selling shirt model, has been in the lineup since the late 1920's. An essential among California surfers in the '60s, it was greased up with petroleum jelly to make an improvised wetsuit. The Blue Original Surf plaid color is the same color and pattern Pendleton Board Shirt worn by the Beach Boys (originally called the Pendletones) on several of their 60's album covers.
The Board Shirt is made from premium, machine-washable wool sourced from local ranchers in Umatilla County, Oregon near the Pendleton mill. The rugged, midweight fabric is water, odor and stain-resistant. This iconic shirt has distinctive details including: the relaxed spread collar, the dual bias-cut chest pockets and the square, straight bottom hem always perfect for wearing untucked.
