Gebruder Merkel, Suhl Germany, circa 1952, 303E Luxus Sidelock Ejector, 12 Bore, 7 lbs. 11 oz., nitro proved, 2 3/4" chambers, 28" barrels marked "Special Laufstahl Weichlot" with a low-height machined vent rib, double Kersten lock extensions, ejectors, front bead, choked .008 IC and .020 Mod, left rear of barrels engraved with maker "Gebruder Merkel, Suhl" and right "Germany", hidden latch hand-detachable sidelock action with double Kersten cross-bolt locks, cocking indicators, top-tang automatic safety, selectable single trigger, French grey finish with very fine hand engraving with wood lot game scenes depicting on the left pheasants with attacking bird-of-prey and on the right, grouse and rabbit with fox, on the left side and fox and ducks on the right side both in natural setting scenes along with bold and ornate acanthus scroll with throughout remainder and on bottom, floral design on bolstered fences, full background stippling gives great contrast, bottom engraved "Gebruder Merkel, Suhl", pleasingly figured European walnut stock with extra acanthus scroll carving behind action locks and very fine 32 lpi checkering, 14 7/16" LOP over a leather covered pad, 1 1/2" DAC, 2 1/2" DAH, 1/8" cast off for right hand shooter, true Prince-of-Wales grip with cap, 3-piece forend, vacant gold stock oval. Comes with a modern leather trunk case. Excellent condition and well cared for gun with only a couple of spots of blue loss at barrel muzzle to report. Really a stunning post-war high-grade sidelock from Merkel.
